I grew up in California. I never knew battling ants wasn't normal.
The BEST remedy I ever found was in Chinatown : "Miraculous Incecticide Chalk"!
It's exactly like a piece of white chalk (for chalkboards). You draw a line around the house, especially the doorways and windows, and the ants never come indoors again. Really amazing stuff!

not that I think you would take my suggestion, here's a option don't do it on a windy day,
wear some over clothing, not that I do, but of course when done, show and change clothes.
go a garden center, purchase a bottle or two. may be three. Bayer Vegetable and garden
spray that will attach to a garden hose, don't use the typical yard hose / 5/8 size
but the air hose, say husky air hose, then buy a male and female water fittings for the
hose. your good to go, spray the base of your house all the way around around the door ways,
side walk around the house, garage, do your entire yard all the way up to the fence, then spray
all along the fence, the 2×4.s cover everything. and wait a a month, do it again. along the drive way edges. my guess they were chased out of some ones yards and your place is not been sprayed, I'm from CA, although we left a few years back, Orange is an other product,
you'll need to make some phone calls vary safe for in the house.
ants will get in between the door way thresh hold plate, we found them there when putting
in a new front door, came through the wall through a closet and up on to my desk, one ant a while later an other ant show up, their gone.
if there is a nest around look for something that has a ledge above the ground, even if only a couple of inches and high up, with some sort of cover, lift the cover, the ants in a last ditch effort will gather there eggs and lay them on a ledge under any sort of cover. and of course
lots of ants, spay them. and spray the thing, ants be gone after that.
